Visit one of the many mines in the area, including historic Kelly Mine, once the state's leading zinc extractor. Other minerals such as lead, silver, smithsonite and gold were and are mined in New Mexico.

The area is rich with a wide variety of rocks, minerals and earth formations. The area west of Magdalena, the Plains of San Agustin, was once an inland sea, and the history of New Mexico is full of old west adventure. Fossils and other remnants of the past can be found by aspiring searchers.
